Portsmouth, VA (BlackNews.com) - Savvy investors are familiar with the fundamentals of investing, such putting their money in companies and industries they know something about, understanding the numbers, and due-diligence. But, it's interesting the length many investors will go to put their money in the market, but give no attention to opportunities right in their own backyard. Know this: There are black entrepreneurs in this country that are simply revolutionizing the Internet, Entertainment/New Media, Telecommunications, Energy, Medical, and Electronics industries, yet they are drawing little to no attention from mainstream Black America. Perhaps because they're not entertainers, athletes, or politicians, their accomplishments often fall and remain below the radar. It's a shame though, because many of these businesses are yielding excellent returns for their investors, well beyond Wall Street and certainly above Main Street.
The typical Angel Investor is a successful individual who invests some of his/her own money, resources, and time in promising start-ups, special projects, and expanding small business enterprises. They're not necessarily rich, but wealthy, business savvy individuals (and groups) who have made their money, retired or sold their company, and want to stay involved in their industry to some extent by putting their energies into the next best thing. Not surprising, such individuals have funded much of our entertainment (black movies, music, newspapers/journals, magazines, television/radio, and online media) and sports, while fostering the rapid growth of our clothing lines, accessories, cosmetics, hotels and resorts, automobile dealerships and retail franchises, real estate development, and (believe it or not) black mega churches. Yet, until recently, there had been no regular gathering of these Angels, nor any significant effort to train and deploy more.
Since 2005, the MBE Capital Call - Conference & Venture Forum has given black entrepreneurs a venue to pitch their ideas for new products and services. Each year the Venture Forum assembles Angel Investors, Venture Capitalists, Banks, and other creditors to consider investments in black owned and operated businesses, pioneers and trailblazers in their respective industries. The Conference continues to provide training and networking opportunities for current business owners and entrepreneurs, while introducing savvy black investors to the art of Angel Investing.
Where are the black angels? There's one reading this article right now. The next MBE Capital Call is September 26th in Richmond, Virginia. Visit www.mbecapitalcall.com for complete details and register today to attend or call C. Renee Turner at (757) 639-8947 for assistance.
